| Uruguay: Travel Tips |
| Submitted by Olivia on 2008-12-02 04:51:59 (via www.i-escape.com) |
| Uruguay has an impressive legacy of artistic and literary traditions, especially for its small size. The contribution of its alternating conquerors and diverse immigrants has resulted in native traditions that integrate this diversity. Uruguay has centuries old remains, fortresses of the colonial era.

well the best place to visit in uruguay, is punta del este, which is a town in the state of Maldonado, 2 hrs from the capital
punta del este, its surrounded by beaches and they are the bests, also and in my opinion the best beach is in Gorritti island, called playa honda (in english means deep beach), you must definetly come in this season, cos later comes the bad weather and so
(im uruguayan by the way hah, i live in punta del este)
pd:if u r thinking in stay in hostels, come to the one im working called hostel del patio, here´s the page: www.hosteldelpatio.com |

Hello ! I live in Uruguay and I would like to comment about this article because I was requested to do so by one user.
Please keep in mind that United and American Airlines dont stop at our airports anymore. Pluna and Aerolineas do, as well as Lan Chile.
If you want to see photos about Colonia del Sacramento, there are several on my page at www.manwathiell.deviantart.com. Most of them are identified on the comments with the words Colonia or Rio de la Plata River.
Information about prices (taxis, etc.) seem quite accurate.
Places of interest:
In summer, the places of interest are Punta del Este (very exclusive and expensive resort, please make sure to have reservations in advance). A cofee can cost us$ 20, so if you go there, come with money. I personally never go there!
Punta del Este has beautiful mansions, an exciting night life (night means go dancing at 2 am, sleeping then all morning and going to the beach only at sunset or so), and beautiful beaches and landscapes. Most exclusive shops, you can rent almost everything you can think of, and it is visited by actors, famous people and in general by people who have really a lot of money.
Much less expensive (and more relaxing and much more beautiful) are the coasts of Rocha.
There are stunning places there like La Paloma, La Pedrera, Costa Azul, Cabo Polonio, Aguas Dulces and Barra de Valizas.
Cabo Polonio and La Paloma are the most popular, then La Pedrera and Costa Azul, and then Aguas Dulces and Barra de Valizas.
Colonia del Sacramento is also very beautiful, but I normally visit that resort in June/July and not in summer, so there´s not much that I can tell. Just one important thing: most restaurants there DO NOT ACCEPT credit cards, so cash is needed.
Summer Vacations
I can mostly speak or comment about the places I know best. Since this is a hectic world, I normally prefer quiet places and I own a hut in Barra de Valizas. But I know the coast of Rocha very well, since I vacationed in all mentioned places during my life.
La Paloma, La Pedrera and Costa Azul have a cool night life. La Paloma has a Casino, too.
It is a great place for those who love night life and want to spend less than in Punta del Este.
La Pedrera is pretty small and very, very crowded. But it is a very nice spot to go too. I am sure you will be able to find photos on the internet if you search. It has one main avenue only (dont you dare to use a care there. It could take you an hour to drive 10 blocks since everybody walks there).
Costa Azul has great beaches and is wider. It has a couple of very good hotels, not very expensive in comparison with Punta del Este and the beaches are known for its beauty. There are also places to dance and eat there, even if many just drive to La Paloma, which is very, very near (15-20 minutes by car).
You will also find information about Cabo Polonio on the internet. The only way to get there is walking (crossing the sand dunes by feet from Valizas to Cabo Polonio is quite an adventure and should be done EARLY in the morning), renting horses to do the same crossing, or purchasing excursions in special transports that take people there. There are no streets at Cabo Polonio and cars are not allowed.
Aguas Dulces is a very nice town where houses are built almost on the beach and so close to each other that it is necessary to cross the backyards of the owners to go to the beach. There is also a main avenue were artisans sell their stuff (you can find the most exotic and rare things there), and there are many restaurants (average quality, nothing fancy). People dress up a bit more elegant at night, even if it is just to take a walk.
Barra de Valizas is my preferred place. It is a very small fishermen town. Half of the town has electricity and half has none. Many houses have no fluent water and use a well to provide it (you buy water to drink, of course, dont ever drink from a well).
The beauty of it for me is that you have no TV, no computer, candles at night. More stars than you could ever imagine. The peace allows you to hear the sea and the wind, the criquets and the frogs.
The beaches along the whole coast are stunning. Everything can be found: huge waves to calm waters.
Barra de Valizas is very unexpensive. 4 people can eat for us$ 32 including beverage.
There are some very cool restaurants (one of them is in the very coast and you eat while you watch the beach).
Well... not sure what else to say.
I signed in but I have not received my linking mail yet, so I am sending this comment without logging in.
And by the way, my name is Manwathiell.

Uruguay is a country wonderful to film films! In addition it is a beautiful place if you like to live peacefully calm and, surrounded by nature and very amiable people. I recommend to know Uruguay and its inhabitants. Its beaches, their prairies, their parks and their culture. Uruguay is a small country of territory but with a great cultural tradition. I see them in Uruguay! |

Hey, I'm from Uruguay but live in the U.S. I go back home as often as possible. I have to say that I tell all my friends in the U.S. about Uruguay and show them pictures and they all think it is beautiful and a great place to go visit. I am biased but I love it like crazy. Punta del Este is great during the summer, it is true that it can get very expensive but if you talk to locals you know where to find cheaper things. While it is true that coffee can be like us$20 you can also go to other places that are still very nice and pay normal prices. It is amazing to see how many people go there during the summer. If you are more interested in the culture and history then stay in the capital or go to places like Colonia. Both beautiful and maybe not as expensive as Punta. Overall, it is a very calm, beautiful place to go for a vacation. You can find everything. If you want to chill or party, you will find the place to be that matches what you want. Don't forget to check out the Chivitos or try some of the meat down there. It is the best meat in the world and Chivitos are the Uruguayan version of burgers but much much tastier!!! Have fun and take pics!! Jess |
