Tips for Travellers visiting Athens in Greece
Submitted by bembridge on 2008-09-09 01:07:38 (via www.tipsfortravellers.com)
Over 5 million people, a staggering 40% of the Greek population, now live in the city. And, if you explore the history of Athens during the late 1960s, into the 1970s and early 80s you read about just how out of control the city did get. What is it like now to visit?

Awesome tips!!! Our family might visit Greece this spring! Can anyone suggest some historical places to visit outside of Athens?

Best Wishes,

While there is no doubt that Greece is a beautiful place I haven't spent a lot of time in Athens. I live in Crete and the last time I was in the city was for a small mission trip to Larissa. We traveled to the Parthenon which is covered in scaffolding (spelling?) and rumor is it will be closed for a soon and for a long time. I agree with the article that Greece is not a final destination but worth visiting once the referbishing of the ruins is done.

nice to have message from someone who lives far away from me..look how things are here in greece...not so good as you think..people here specially in athens want to take advantage of you.specially taxi drivers!!!!they asking 50eyro for a ridetaxi ina athens!!!athens has a lot of nice places but traffic is awfull!!!only metro is nice...if you want to visit greece just know that a logical price for rooms is about 40euro in athens.its better for you to stay there 2days visit acropolis, licavitos, thiseio, monastiraki, psiri.thats all...then LEAVE!go to our beatiful islands santorini kriti
if you go santorini you say oh GOD what a place! each island you decide to go find room when you arrive there. prices are cheapest there and you'll surely find if its not august or jule.prices there for rooms are also 40euros.and less sometimes.stay into santorini.fira called the village. if you go kriti stay in xania its for tourists perfect there night life and not only...i read the page you send me it said true things there..and remember:athens is not for vocations only for a little..take the boat from there and leave...

I don't live in Athens but I visited sometimes. What impressed me (in a negative way) was the brutal increase of its population! Plus the lack of civilization is what characterizes the majority of the people! Everyone uses their car to cover small distances. They don't use the public transportation but they prefer to use their car, which leads to heavy polution! Most of the cars that travel in the city, have only 1 passenger! Also it's not unusual for the drivers to throw trash or cigarettes through their cars windows.
This is Athens! The stones, the statues and the marbles do not represent our civilization! Also the rumor that the people are nice, is not true! Some of them may be but the majority is rude, having serious attitude problems!

Sorry to say but I find this to be written with very bad attitude. No my friend things are not like this. Greek people are nice and friendly, if you are the same. If you go to a country and do not respect the way people think and act then is better not to travel. Travelling give us the opportunity to open our minds and see other people cultures and ways of their thinking and leaving. Please respect the locals and you will receive a very warm welcome
