I would say it is quite safe. My friend went by herself to Ecuador for a month and she loved it. As long as you take common sensical precautions against theft (as you would even if you weren't travelling alone). Ecuador is a very inexpensive place to travel, you can have breakfast by the sea, lunch in the mountains and dinner in the jungle all in one day, Ecuador is a beautiful place to meet.
